Thin Ice is
the second book in Irene Hannon’s Men of Valor series. While this book mentions
events and characters from the first book, it works well as a stand-alone read.
This book features FBI Special Agent Lance McGregor, a former Delta Force
operator as its man of valor. Rookie agent McGregor is thrilled to be released
from reviewing files as he takes on his first case, even more so when he meets
the lady who had sounded so cautious over the phone. Christy Reed’s life was
being turned upside down; without the physical evidence she presented, her
claims would have been difficult to believe. As Lance delves into Christy’s
case the situation goes from bizarre to sinister, and he cannot allow anything
to happen to the lady with whom he is quickly falling in love.
The theme of
this book deals with the hope that comes from holding onto faith in times of
great trouble and sorrow. We see the impact of this in our protagonist’s life
as she truly finds her strength in the Lord. Because she is able to give the
reason for her hope (1 Peter 3:15), Christy is able to help Lance rediscover
the faith he had set aside as he encountered the atrocities of war. Through our
antagonist we see the extremes of a life with no faith and no hope.
Irene Hannon
continues to show her readers why she is a three-time RITA Award winner and how
she earned her place in the Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her
writing is crisp, and action packed. Romance and mystery are well balanced,
well paced, and intense without walking too close to the edge of what readers
of Christian fiction expect from trusted authors. Hannon’s dialogue is natural
and believable, avoiding clichés and over use of trendy phrases. I especially
appreciate that she uses vocabulary above that of your local newspaper.
